I was warned–well, strictly forbidden is probably closer to the mark–about leaving the safety of the compound.
But having been trapped in that enclosed space for weeks, I needed out.
What was the harm, as long as I stayed away from people I would be fine. Which should have been easy since everyone was quarantined.
In hindsight, a few more weeks inside, in quiet solitude wouldn’t have been that bad.
Now here I stood, surrounded by others who all had the same idea. Mulling around the mall, all the stores closed, trying to find some semblance of the life we had before. I remained calm–what else could I do–then the coughing started.
